Lauren Dean Atz, 84, of Tempe, Arizona, formerly of Kendallville passed away on March 15, 2013, after having suffered a fall. Mr. Atz was born in Kendallville on September 21, 1928, to Ralph Harold and Elsie (Wagner) Atz.

After attending St. John Lutheran School, he graduated from Kendallville High School in 1946. Enlisting in the Army after high school, Lauren was sent to Japan as part of the occupation forces. Returning from the service, Lauren enrolled in Indiana University in Bloomington and was married to Susannah Herr in 1949. Being called back to serve his country in the fall of 1950, Lauren was sent to Korea and served in the artillery. He was eventually released as a Master Sergeant in the fall of 1951. He finished his bachelor's degree in Business and graduated from Indiana University in 1952.

Lauren worked in the family business, Puritan Ice Cream Company and Atz Ice Cream Shoppes in
Kendallville and Fort Wayne, until 1975. While in Kendallville, Lauren was a member of St. John
Lutheran Church and served as chairman of the congregation for several years; he was also active in and served as president of the Jaycees, Kendallville Chamber of Commerce, and the Kendallville Rotary Club.

In 1975, Lauren and Susie relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona where they purchased a Hallmark Gift Shop which they operated for 20 years. Lauren and Susie were members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for all of their years in Arizona.

Surviving are his wife, Susannah, a brother, Norman Atz of Fort Wayne, and four children
including Marc (Bobbi) Atz of Washington D.C., Douglas (Deedra) Atz of Kendallville, Barton (Lisa) Atz of Woodland, CA, and Sarah Beth (Dr. Thomas) Morgan of Sioux City, IA.

Lauren's grandchildren include: Marc's daughter Lindsay; Douglas's children, Jacob, Abigail Creigh, Gabriel, and Sarah “Sadie”; Barton's daughters Alison and Alexandra, and Sarah Beth's children, Rebekah and Matthew; as well as six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church, 301 South Oak Street, Kendallville, with Rev. Dr. Robert Shriner officiating. Burial is in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Preferred memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville.
