Maxine N. Berhalter
March 28, 1922 - February 16, 2013
Maxine N. Berhalter, 90, of Kendallville died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 11:27 p.m. in Lutheran Life Villages, Kendallville.
She was a lifetime area resident, and a 1940 graduate of Garrett High School.
Mrs. Berhalter worked for the Ludlow Monument Company in Kendallville and retired in 1985 after 17 years as bookkeeper at Cal-Gas in Kendallville. She then volunteered as a shuttle driver for the Red Cross in Fort Wayne for blood drives for 20 years.
She was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville.
Maxine loved to write in her journal. She enjoyed researching family geneology and taking photographs, always dating and adding names to them.
She was born March 28, 1922, in DeKalb County to Page and Ella L. (Fellers) Hathaway. On October 17, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, she married Joe G. Berhalter. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2007.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Berhalter of Sylvan Lake and Randy Berhalter of Kendallville, three grandchildren, Dawn (Bob) Blum of Rome City, Hindi (Rick) Clark of Kendallville, and Laura Kay (John) Meyers of Albion; and eight great grandchildren, Cort Newport, Kara Newport, Ryan Clark, Alyn Clark, Alyx Clark, Tyler Eggle, Dylan Eggle, and Matthew Meyers.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Sheri Berhalter; five sisters, Jennie Casebeer, Elsie Shipe, Mabel Sternburgh, Essie Wilhelm, and LaVon Eberly; and four brothers, Elmer Hathaway, Charles Hathaway, Ronald Hathaway, and Ora Hathaway.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Steve Brittenham of Trinity Church United Methodist officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Casketbearers will be Charles Berhalter, Rick Clark, Cort Newport, Al Berhalter, and Howard Mapes.
Calling is Wednesday, February 20, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Lutheran Life Villages Kendallville Campus Auxiliary.
