Palmer D. PD Smith, Sr., 65, of South Milford was carried home to be with the Lord by angels on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne after battling a short fight with cancer.

He graduated from North Caroline High School in Greensboro, Maryland, in 1965 and went on to serve his country in the United State Army from 1966 to 1967.

In 2001, Palmer retired after 38 years from Kraft Foods in Dover, Delaware. He attended One Truth Christian Outreach in Ashley.

PD was loved much, and will be missed immensely.

He was born March 25, 1946, in Greensboro, Maryland, to Homer and Elizabeth (Langrell) Smith. On March 12, 2000, in Ridgely, Maryland, he married Debi (Pearson) Elkins.

Surviving are his wife, Debi Smith of South Milford; a precious son, Palmer PJ and Lynsey Smith of Felton, Delaware; one loving granddaughter, Taylor Smith of Felton, Delaware; one precious grandson, Jeremy Easterday, at home with Palmer and Debi; his loving sister, Brenda and Johnnie Eberhard of Denton, Maryland; two loving brothers, Jimmie and Carolyn Smith of Felton, Delaware, and Ken and Pauline Smith of Patrol, Canada; three stepsons, Harold and Lisa Goodman of Kendallville, Kenny Pearson of South Milford, and Gordon and Audra Elkins of South Milford; four stepdaughters, Dee and Terry Furlow of South Milford, Violet and Chuck Grime of Angola, Heather and Jeff Burlison of Princeton, West Virginia, and Misty and Hugh Easterday of LaGrange; and many step grandchildren.

He was also blessed with three wonderful caregivers in his time of need, Dee Furlow, Misty Easterday, and Norma Harper who loved him dearly and made his last days pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 29, 2011, at 1 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, with Pastor Paul Slone of One Truth Christian Outreach officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville. Honor guard services will be provided by VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 381, and active duty members of the U.S. Army.

Honorary casketbearers will be Buster Elkins and Terry Furlow. Active casketbearers will be Jeremy Easterday, Justin Easterday, Palmer Smith, Jr., Hugh Easterday, Chuck Grime, Adam Zimmerman, Ken Smith, and Rocky Garton.

Calling is Wednesday, September 28, 2011, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Deb, I am Uncle PD's nephew from his first marriage. I'm Jimmy Ross' son. I grew up with PJ and Bonnie and bein around uncle PD was always fun. I loved goin coon huntin with him and my dad. Lost touch many years ago when I moved away. He was a really good man and will be missed. So sorry for your loss!

Miss Deb your family is in my thoughts and prayers I love you and stay strong. I wanted to come to viewing but have pneumonia and am not able to. I am so sorry. But will be keeping your family in prayer.

We will miss PD as our good neighbor and having occasional chats now and then.Alot of times our little dog would get loose and hang out with him until I got her.To all of the family you are in our prayers and know that he is in good hands now and no pain.
