Obituary
Jack D. Deter, 83, of Kendallville died Monday, May 2, 2011, in his residence.
Mr. Deter has lived in this area since 1966, coming from El Paso, Texas.
He worked as a mechanic. He also worked in maintenance at Kraft Foods, in Kendallville. He retired as a millwright from Kirsch in Sturgis, Michigan.
Jack honorably served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the Howe United Methodist Church, VFW Post 2749 in Kendallville, and American Legion Post 341 in Rome City. He was a Boy Scout member and leader for 60 years.
He was born January 2, 1928, in Sturgis, Michigan, to Russell and Opal (Chrystler) Deter. On November 18, 1950, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, he married Mary J. Etie.
Surviving are his wife, Mary J. Deter of Kendallville; two daughters, Linda (Harold “Skip”) Meggison of Sturgis and Deanna (Jerry) Anderson of Kendallville; four sons, Rick (Sue) Deter of Albion, Allen (Michelle) Deter of Pretty Lake, Russell Deter of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ron (Cathy) Deter of South Milford; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a brother, Richard (Beatrice) Deter of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 5, 2011, at 5 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, with Pastor G. Scott Pattison of Trinity Church United Methodist, Kendallville officiating.
Honor guard services will be conducted at the funeral home by VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 341, and active duty members of the U.S. Army.
Calling is Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Anthony Wayne Council of the Boy Scouts.

We were so sorry to hear of Jack's death. We appreciated Mary and him coming to Mom's (Sue Hasbrouck)visitation. It meant a great deal to us! Jack was a very special person, so kind and soft-spoken, gentle and caring. He will be greatly missed by many!!
