Will never forget the rainy afternoon when Uncle Clyde entertained 5 of his nephews will a very simple magic trick from a box of cereal. He let us try it for a long time and after a few hours we finally got it. Rest In Peace Uncle Clyde. I pray to see you again.

I got to know Clyde through my position as park interpreter at Pokagon State Park. The last Sunday of July, the park held and still does an open house/reunion of Company 556 of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Clyde was a Company 556 CCC veteran, living and working at Pokagon in the late 1930s. Though the reunion was held every year beginning in 1953, Clyde first attendance came in the early 2000s. I asked him, “Clyde, this reunion has been going on for over 50 years, you live just down the road, this is the first time you have ever come?!” His response was,”Yeah, I knew about them, but I’ve been busy…” That just cracked me up and we became instant friends. For the next decade and a half, Clyde became a fixture at the CCC event. For the last few years, it was just he and one other veteran left attending. If other Company 556 veterans are still living, we do not know, but Otis Stahl and Clyde were the last two attending. Otis passed away last year, 2018. I have a great memory of January 2017, taking Clyde up to Sturgis where Otis still sang karaoke at the Sturgis Eagles at 96 years old! I have a photo, a little dark from the club setting, of the two of them sitting close and talking, telling stories of years long ago. Now they are together once more, with other CCC veterans, telling stories once again.

I knew you only a short time in your 99 years, but my life was enriched by having been your friend. Rest in peace my brother, until we meet again.

So sad to hear of Clyde’s passing. I enjoyed seeing him at the McEntarfer reunions and listening to him at last year’s CCC presentation at Pokagon. He was a very wise and humorous man.

Rest In Peace Uncle Clyde. I'll always remember home made ice cream at your house and riding in your pickup going down interstate 69 before it was open.

My sympathy and condolences go out to the family. It was always a pleasure talking with Clyde at the McEntarfer reunions. He attributed his long life to having one beer each day. I’ll drink to that! God Bless you Clyde.
