He was born August 4, 1937, in DeKalb County to Franklin Joseph and Violet Juanita (Resoner) Smith.

Mr. Smith honorably served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960.

On September 10, 1960, in Auburn he married Janis E. Bacon. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2017.

He retired after 40-plus years from Moore Business Forms, now R.R. Donnelley in Angola. He also worked for a short time as a deputy Marshall for the town of Ashley.

JC was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Waterloo and former President of the Hudson Town Board. He bowled in Butler for many years. His love of gardening and just being outdoors, led him to be a baseball and basketball coach while his sons were in school. And, he was a Tri-County baseball umpire for Steuben and DeKalb County high schools for several years.

Surviving are three sons, Jeff Smith of Angola, Joe (Tammy) Smith of Hamilton, and Jim (Andrea) Smith of Surprise, Arizona; six grandchildren, Brady Smith, Tristan Smith, Karli Smith, Teegan Smith, Leigha Gulliver, and Dax Gulliver; and a brother, Larry (Sue) Smith of Newberry, Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February 16, 2018, at 12 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1098 CR 39, Waterloo with Father Dave Carkenord officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
