Alice Jean Aungst, 85, of Avilla died Monday, December 28, 2015, at 5:15 a.m. in Presence Sacred Heart Home, Avilla.

She had resided in Avilla since February, coming from Kendallville.

She started working at Sears & Roebuck in Kendallville and Thrapp & Thrapp in Kendallville. She retired from People’s Federal in Kendallville after 20 years. After retirement, she worked as a secretary at the Northeastern Center in Kendallville.

Jean volunteered at the Windmill Museum, Northeastern Center, and she and her husband volunteered for Meals on Wheels all in Kendallville.

Jean dearly loved her grandchildren. She also enjoyed raising a garden, tending to her flowers, and cooking and baking, especially for her family. But, most of all, Jean loved family reunions and gathering together with her extended family.

She was born June 8, 1930, in LaGrange County to Frederick W. and Edna Christina (Thomas) Beiswanger.

On July 12, 1958, in Kendallville she married Burnell Dean Aungst. He prececed her in death on December 4, 2004.

Surviving are two daughters, Gloria (Mike “Radar”) Smith of Berne and Betty Aungst of Kendallville; a son, Tony (Carri) Aungst of Kendallville; and six grandchildren, Matthew Smith of Berne, Andrew Smith of Berne, Mark Smith of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Alyssa Aungst of Bloomington, Emily Aungst of Bloomington, and Olivia Aungst of Kendallville.

The last of nine children, Jean was preceded in death by five brothers, Arlo Beiswanger, Arden Beiswanger, Paul Beiswanger, Leroy Beiswanger, and Eldon Beiswanger; and three sisters, Irene Gage, Lucille VanWagner, and an infant.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Tom Novy officiating. Burial will be in Sweet Cemetery.

I just heard that Jean passed away. I am so sorry I didn't make it to the funeral home. I feel bad for your loss. Hope you find it comforting that your parents are together again. Thinking about my parents being together is helpful for me. My thoughts and prayers are coming your way.

Dear Enid and Val; Kim told us the news of Jean's passing. We are so very sorry! We know she was such a special and important cog in the wheel of your family. Even though we know she has been released from her suffering and is now reunited with Burnell, it doesn't lessen your family sorrow. She will be so very missed by all of you. We wish there was something we could say to ease your loss, but words always seem so trivial at these times. The only comfort we have found in these experiences is to remember the laughter and love that was the precious gift you all shared over her lifetime. Her presence in your lives was a blessing, and we are certain she treasured each and every one of you. We send our deepest sympathy and love to both of you; and ask that you please relate this message to Todd's, Brian's, and her children's families for us. You are all in our thoughts, hearts, and prayers. With love always, Charlene & Dave

I am so sorry for your loss. Jean was such a nice lady. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I especially hope Betty is doing well. Lou and Leroy were my grandparents and I would play with Betty when we were younger. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
