Burial will be at the Orange Cemetery in Rome City. ************************************************************************************* Walter Max Franklin, Sr., 87, of Kendallville passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014, after a long-fought battle with cancer at North Ridge Rehab Center in Albion.

He was born October 20, 1926, in Wolcottville to Cecil and Mabel Franklin. He lived in Rome City from 1931 to 1974, then moving his family to Kendallville in 1974.

He graduated from Rome City High School in 1945. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a U.S. Air Force and Korean War veteran. He was honored to attend the honor flight in May to Washington, D.C.

He married Cecelia A. Harbin in Brimfield on March 23, 1956. They were married 42 years until her passing in 1998.

He worked at McCray Refrigeration for 25 years. He often spoke of the number of friends he met while working at all four of the Kendallville foundries over the span of 24 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Jacalyn S. (Steve) Powell of Kendallville and Cathy A. (Charles) Allen of Naperville, Illinois; a son, Max (Linda) Franklin, Jr. of Kendallville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, two sisters, a brother, his wife, and a son, Michael D. Franklin.

Mr. Franklin was a member of the Kendallville American Legion Post 86, Wounded Warriors, and the Disabled American Veterans of America.

He was an avid Notre Dame football supporter, San Francisco Giants baseball fan, and enjoyed listening to Bluegrass music on WAWK. He loved taking walks around Bixler Lake with his friend, Evalyn McDonald. Attending the annual Kendallville Bluegrass Festival with his two favorite nephews, Wally Stevens and Ronald Stout was another great past time for him. His compassion was meeting and talking to people, nobody was a stranger to him.
