Obituary

Van Baker, 85, of Kendallville formerly of Albion died Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 3:20 a.m. in Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.

He was born March 6, 1932, in Hamilton to Virgil and Artie Faye (Beard) Baker.

He honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War where he served as an aircraft mechanic and corpsman.

On March 6, 1955, in Butler he married Evelyn V. Knox.

Mr. Baker retired from Starcraft in Topeka after 26 years. He and his wife also operated Bakers' Ceramics in Albion for 30 years.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albion.

Van was an expert at bowling and enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn V. Baker of Kendallville; three sons, Wayne (Pam) Baker of Albion, Jeff (Tham) Baker of Garrett, and Dean (Rhonda) Baker of Kendallville; eight grandchildren, Lindsay Wabika, Jeremy (Kylee) Baker, Kyle (Melissa) Baker, Kevin (Danielle) Baker, Matt Baker, Katrina Baker, Shawn Baker, and Lisa Baker; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Akers of Hamilton, and Sue Elaine Maxson of Fort Wayne; and two brothers, Dean (Anna Mae) Baker of Hamilton and Larry (Pat) Baker of Auburn.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Ellen Bradtmiller, Ruth Sutton, Mildred Bressler, and June Robinette; and two brothers, Keith Baker and Max Baker.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 4 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Elder Kurt Knox officiating.

Calling is Saturday, July 15, 2017, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Parkview Noble Home Health and Hospice.
