Obituary

Valma Grace Gilliland, 99, of Kendallville died Sunday, October 28, 2018, at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.

She was born May 18, 1919, in Fort Wayne to A. Paul and Mary Elizabeth (Grandey) Gilliland.

Miss Gilliland, a lifetime area resident, had received her Master's Degree from the University of Denver. She was a teacher from 1941 to 1982. She taught Latin and English at the Avilla High School for three years. During that time, she also taught Math following the death of a fellow teacher. She then taught English at Kendallville High School, and was the Librarian at East Noble High School in Kendallville until her retirement.

After retirement, Valma taught Sunday School for 25 years, led a Bible study for 20 years, and for 15 years had written a monthly eight line verse which was sent to approximately 50 church members for encouragement.

Valma was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Kendallville for over 75 years, Delta Kappa Gamma for 40+ years, and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are a niece, Paula Rutherford of Muncie; three nephews, Craig Gilliland and his wife, Lori of The Sea Ranch, California, Doug and his wife, Jill Gilliland of Archbold, Ohio, and David Gilliland and his partner, Roni Eley of Duluth, Georgia; two great-nieces, Holly Rutherford and Carmen Gilliland; a great-nephew, Nicolas Gilliland; and two great-great-nieces, Briley Grace Rutherford and Carly Rutherford.

She was preceded in death by her father on October 16, 1990; her mother on March 4, 1995; and a brother, A. Rex Gilliland in February, 1984.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Steven Bahrt of Faith United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Calling is Tuesday, November 6, 2018, from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the Faith United Methodist Church Preschool or the Kendallville Public Library.
