Thomas J. Mortimore, Sr. 89, of Kendallville, Indiana, died Saturday, September 21, 2024, at his residence.
He was born June 30, 1935, at home in Kendallville, Indiana, to Homer P. and Reba Mae (Olinger) Mortimore.
He attended school at Wayne Center with many of his friends.
Tom joined the Army in March of 1954 and served until May, 1957, stationed in Detroit. Upon his return to Kendallville he started his own roofing business. After ten years, he re-enlisted in the Army, serving in Vietnam. He retired in 1984 after 23 years of honorable service.
Tom was proud to serve his country. He was a life member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 86, DAV, and Kendallville Moose Lodge. He spent many hours at the VFW as commander and district chaplain. He also served as a member of the Honor Guard to honor his fallen veterans.
He also worked at Taylor Made in Kendallville.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Carolyn S. (Martin) Mortimore of Kendallville; three sons, Thomas (Cindy) Mortimore, Jr. of Huntington, Wade Mortimore of Kettering, Ohio, and Kevin (Kim) Marti of Kendallville; a daughter, Kay (Mike) Tuttle of Huntington; a stepdaughter, Dawn (Dan) Reed of Edon, Ohio; a stepson, Robert Foust of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Patricia Febles of Kendallville and Sandra Muscello of Kendallville; nine grandchildren, Ashley (Jordan) Glasner, Seth Mortimore, Jade Mortimore, Jennifer (Kevin) Collins, Samantha (Trent) Sherman, Jeremiah (Amber) Foust, Robbie Foust, Raymond (Kaitlyn) Reed, and Spenser (Stephanie) Reed; and 16 great-grandchildren, Jhett and Ace Glasner, Wyatt, Levi, and Weston Mortimore, Conner Williams, Brody and Jaxson Ashley, Lennon Chappel, Trip Sherman, Nolani and Hunter Foust, Brianna, Addilee, Isaiah, and Jareson Reed.
Tom was preceded in death by two sisters, Leahmae Palmer and Bonnie Shoemaker; a brother, Jerry Mortimore; and a stepson, Tab Foust.
Visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville.
The funeral service will be Friday, September 27, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Sedan Cemetery. Honor Guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers are Raymond Reed, Spenser Reed, Russell Muscello, Mike Mortimore, Travis Mortimore, and Chris Palmer.
Memorials are to Kendallville VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 86, or DAV of Corunna.
