Missionary Stephen A. Lutz, MD, of Papua, New Guinea, was called to his eternal home on June 15, 2010, at Adams Lake, Wolcottville, Indiana, following a long illness.
He was the son of missionary Rev. Arnold J. and Juanita A. (Becker) Lutz and born in Nagercoil, South India on November 5, 1949. He attended school at Kodikanal South India through high school, received his BS Ed from Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE, and his MD degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. Following residency, he practiced surgery in Muscatine, Iowa, for 3 years before accepting a call to serve with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in the medical mission work in Papua New Guinea beginning in 1986 until the present.
He married Julia D. Behrens on March 27, 1978; she survives. Survived by children Anton of Papua New Guinea, Paul (and Rebecca and four grandchildren) of Newport News, VA, Laura (and Nathan) Hall of Minneapolis, MN, and David of Valparaiso, IN. He is also survived by his mother, of Ames, IA, brothers John (and Christi) of Adams Lake, IN, David (and Nancy) of Danbury, CT, Timothy (and Danh) of Ames, IA, Philip (and TaiLing) of Rancho Cordova, CA, Charles (and Suzanne) of Annapolis, MD, Thomas of Wasilla, AK, and sister Alice (and Gary) Paul of St Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, Iowa, on June 18 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and also at St Paul Lutheran Church on June 19 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. The funeral will be at St Paul Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on June 19, conducted by Rev Todd Jenks.
Memorials may be given to the Papua New Guinea Mission Society ( PO Box 28356 Oakdale, MN 55128) and LCMS World Mission (1333 South Kirkwood Rd, St Louis, MO 63122).
