Ruth A. Smith, 90, of Kendallville died Monday, May 7, 2012, in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Smith was a lifetime area resident.

She was a homemaker, and, along with her husband owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Auburn from 1967 until their retirement in 1980.

Ruth was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville and a charter member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority. She enjoyed going to the YMCA in Kendallville for swim exercise.

She was born February 23, 1922, in Kendallville to Sheridan and Rachel (Riehm) Carter. On January 23, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Fairfield, she married Charles N. "Bud" Smith. He preceded her in death on October 21, 2011.

Surviving are three daughters and a son-in-law, Melinda "Linda" Napier of Campton, Kentucky, Sherrill "Sherry" Vaughn-Eash and Gerald Eash of Shipshewana, and Pamela "Pam" Hanes and her companion, Van Smith of Waterloo; two sons, Charles Carter Smith of Waterloo and Kendall Smith of Kendallville; 11 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and one great great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George Carter; and two sons-in-law, Rex Vaughn and Earl Napier.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 11, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Paul B. Griebel officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Calling is Thursday, May 10, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Friday.
