Ruth E. Barker, 97, of Kendallville passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 7:35 p.m. at Orchard Pointe Health Campus in Kendallville.
She was born March 13, 1921, in Martinsville to Isaac Franklin and Edith Fay (Lewis) Bange.
On April 14, 1943 in Martinsville, she married Robert M. Barker. He preceded her in death.
Ruth and her husband, Robert, moved to the area in 1952 from Martinsville. In 1953, they began the Bertelsens Jewerly Store on Williams Street in Kendallville, later renaming it to Barker's Jewelry Store and moving to their current location on South Main Street.
Mrs. Barker was member of the Church of Christ on East North Street in Kendallville and Sigma Eta Sorority of Fine Arts.
Ruth began playing the violin at age 4 and played in the East Noble Theater orchestra for many years. She loved to sit in her living room and sing with her family. Her family stated, "Her living room was the best entertainment in town".
Surviving are a daughter, Cherris (Louie) Lehman of Kendallville ; four grandchildren, Cyndi (Ben) Fetrow of Kendallville, Jennifer "Jamila" (Bob) Davey of Austin, Texas, Stephanie V. Barker of Chicago, and Sam M. Barker of Chicago; three great-grandchildren, Kailee Blackman, Nikolas Blackman, and Sebastian Griffiths.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, David Barker and Morris Dean "Mo" Barker; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Lee (Miles) Barker; two sisters, Maxine Griffith and Geraldine Richardson; and a brother, William "Bill" Bange.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Michael Kirby of the Church of Christ in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery at a later date.
Calling is Tuesday, June 12, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
