Roger W. Newman, 78, of Steinbarger Lake, Wawaka passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, at 9 p.m. in his residence following a short illness.
Mr. Newman, a lifetime area resident, graduated from Kendallville High School in 1951.
He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy. Upon his return from the service, he worked for his parents at Elmer's Bar on Main Street in Kendallville. For the past 40 years he was self-employed with Newman's Enterprise, Inc. as a merchandiser to area clubs, such as the VFW, American Legion, Eagles and Moose.
He was a member of VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 86, Kendallville Moose Lodge, Kendallville Eagles Lodge, the Garrett VFW, and the Goshen VFW.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He greatly enjoyed his family and friends and was well loved. He knew how to live life to the fullest.
He was born December 24, 1932, in Kendallville to Elmer T. and Pearl B. (Hewitt) Newman. On April 19, 1959, in Kendallville he married Evelyn Lehman.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Newman of Steinbarger Lake; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicky and Gerald May of Ligonier and Dawn and David Marshall of Steinbarger Lake; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Rita Newman of Rome City; two grandsons, Greg E. Emerick, Jr. and Derek Marshall both of Kendallville; and a great granddaughter, Malorie Elaine Marshall of Kendallville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Richard Newman and Eugene Newman.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 1, 2011, at 2 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, with Rev. James Tews of Messiah Lutheran Church, Wolcottville officiating. Burial will be in Orange Cemetery, Rome City. Military graveside services will be provided by VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 381, and active duty members of the U.S. military.
Casketbearers will be Mark Newman, Derek Marshall, Greg Emerick, Jr., Gerald May, David Marshall, Wes Bailey, Wesley Bailey, and Dan Oakley.
Calling is Thursday, March 31, 2011, from 2 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Noble County Cancer Society.
