Robert E. Strunk, Sr., 96, of Avilla died Thursday, May 11, 2017, at 3:15 a.m. in Kendallville Manor in Kendallville.
He was born October 27, 1920, in Minnesota to Harry and Martha (Hasert) Strunk. As a young child, his family moved to California.
He served in the Army during World War II. In 1944, he moved to Indiana.
On December 30, 1960, in Niles, Michigan, he married Lois L. Miller. She survives in Kendallville.
Mr. Strunk worked at the Kendallville Foundry for 20 years. He retired after 12 years as a custodian at East Noble High School and the East Noble superintendent's office.
He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Kendallville and a life member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749.
Robert enjoyed walking, fishing, camping, and going to church. He also loved to put together jigsaw puzzles, glue them together, and place them in frames.
Also surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Jefferson of Kendallville and Loretta (Timothy) Boyd of Roachdale; three sons, Robert E. "Bob" (Valorie) Strunk, Jr. of Kendallville, Randy (Janet) Smith of LaGrange, and Kent Strunk of Wilton Manors, Florida; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 10 great great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Jones of Sacramento, California, and Goldie Wood of Los Angeles, California.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Burgi; two grandsons, Aric Smith and Jared Boyd; two sisters, Anna Mae McClaird and Pearl Beasley; and three brothers, Earl Strunk, Lester Strunk, and Dale Strunk.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 15, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Pastor Robert Boston of New Hope Baptist Church in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be in Wright Cemetery near Stroh.
Honor guard services will be provided by Kendallville VFW Post 2749, Rome City American Legion Pose 381, Kendallville American Legion Post 86, and active duty members of the U.S. Army.
Calling is Sunday, May 14, 2017, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Parkview Noble Hospice or the activities fund at Kendallville Manor.
