Robert Sorensen, 89, son of Jens Herluf and Josephine (Kannengieser) Sorensen, died Sunday, July 8, 2018, at his residence.

Bob grew up in Brooklyn, New York, attending Stuyvesant High School in New York City. He graduated from Tri-State in Angola in December, 1954 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

He moved to Kendallville during the early 1950's. While continuing to maintain a summer home in Schroon Lake, New York, he met and married Dorothy (Castonguay) Cates, who preceded him in death on January 11, 2018.

He served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne and Rangers in 1951 and 1952.

Mr. Sorensen was an engineer at Newnam Foundry until 1964, then co-founded Lane Foundry the same year and remained there as engineer until he resigned in 1983. During that time he became CEO after Claude Lane's death. He was then self-employed in construction until 1991, followed by his work as a pattern maker for Kreider Manufacturing until his retirement in 2001. He also designed and built his home to include the inside cabinetry. His hobbies consisted of building radio controlled model airplanes and sailboats.

During his lifetime Bob was a Big Brother/Big Sister volunteer for six years, active in the Lions Club for three years, a member of the American Legion Post 86 and the Moose Lodge, and served on the Kendallville Bank & Trust and Summit Bank Board of Directors for more than ten years.

Bob is survived by stepchildren, Suzanne Mountz, Julie Cates (Darrell Austin), Darren Cates and husband, Jayson Balsley and their son, Jonah Balsley and by several nieces and a nephew, to include his very special niece, Pat Davis and her son, Charles.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Beverly; and their daughter, Renee; his second wife, Dorothy; son-in-law, Jeff Mountz; and a brother, John Sorensen.

A memorial gathering of family and friends will be Saturday, July 14, 2018, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with the Veterans Honor Guard providing services at 5 p.m.
