Richard L. "Dick" Hammel, 83, of Kendallville went home Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 5:45 a.m. in Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.
He was a lifetime area resident.
Richard was a U.S. Army veteran.
He worked for 20 years at the Lutheran Home in Kendallville. He retired from Flint & Walling in Kendallville after 15 years.
He was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville and a member of American Legion Post 86 in Kendallville.
Richard had a passion for fishing and enjoyed gardening. He was an avid reader. After losing his eyesight as a teenager, he became a reader of books on tape. He greatly loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was born July 31, 1929 in Kendallville to Arnold M. & Inez Eva (Conklin) Hammel. He married Patricia E. "Pat" McClellan on September 3, 1949, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia E. "Pat" Hammel of Kendallville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Amy Faye & Roy Heinke of Bremen and Tricia Beth Hammel of Kendallville; two grandchildren, Aaron J. and Jessica Heinke of Lafayette and Gavin L. Heinke of Bremen; two great grandchildren, Ian J. Heinke and Hannah E. Heinke; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Sharon Hammel of Kendallville and Jack and Pat Hammel of Huntertown; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Keith Leiter of Huntertown and Sharon and Larry Beverly of Wolcottville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Sunday, August 19, 2012, at 3 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Dr. Robert Shriner of St. John Lutheran Church officiating. Private burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Calling is Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church, the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, or Parkview Noble Home Health and Hospice.
