Obituary

Ora Dean Stackhouse, 86, of Pleasant Lake died Saturday, September 2, 2017, in his residence.

He was born December 6, 1930, in Corunna to Glen and Hazel (Bordner) Stackhouse.

On September 14, 1951, in Ashley he married Rita Marie Helms.

Mr. Stackhouse honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1955.

He retired as a milk hauler and then worked for the Steuben County Highway Department.

He attended the Pleasant Lake Baptist Church and was a member of the Odd Fellows in Angola, Orland American Legion Post 423, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, the Steuben Antique Power Association, Northeast Indiana Steam and Gas Association of LaGrange, and had served as a volunteer for the Pleasant Lake Fire Department.

Ora enjoyed tinkering on engines of any kind, especially Maytag hit-and-miss engines. He also enjoyed his Farmall tractor, driving his golf cart around town, and watching IU versus Purdue basketball. He loved when friends came into the garage and talked in his man cave where he had his own television and refrigerator. Keeping his mind sharp with word puzzles, he also loved to tell stories and jokes, especially the "pull my finger" joke, and he dearly loved his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Stackhouse of Pleasant Lake; four daughters, Deborah (Ira) Leslie of Ashley, Arvilla Stackhouse of Ashley, Angela D. (Eric) Sauter of Angola, and Rachael (Ken) Collins of Valparaiso; 12 Grandchildren, Doug, Travis, Courtney, Gary Jr, Arrita, Michael, Brittney, Payne, Hannah, Ashley, Nicole, and Garrett; 27 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill (Gloria) Stackhouse of Angola.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jessica Bogert; a son, Doug Stackhouse, Sr.; three sisters, Gladys, Lois, and Ruth; and eight brothers, Allen, Raymond, Paul, Robert, Albert, John, Dallas, and Ralph.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 8, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Lake Baptist Church with Rev. George Foulk and Rev. Lynn Eicher officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery with honor guard services by American Legion Post 423.

Calling is Thursday, September 7, 2017, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the services on Friday.
