Norbert C. "Nick" Chester, 82, of Rome City, Indiana died Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Orchard Pointe Health Campus in Kendallville.
He was born August 21, 1942, in Fort Wayne to Carl and Margaret (Parrot) Chester.
On September 19, 1964, in Fort Wayne he married Carolyn Sue Harpel. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2023.
He had worked at General Electric in Fort Wayne as a maintenance machinist. After retirement he worked at Sylvan Springs in Rome City where he gave tours.
Nick was a member of St. Gaspar Catholic Church in Rome City, Lions Club of Rome City/Brimfield; and the Kekionga Camping Club. He was a Boy Scout leader for 25 years where he was assistant scout master.
Along with his wife, they were foster parents for 69 children. They were also a presenting couple for Marriage Encounter Retreats. They started the Community Thanksgiving Dinner and the Angel Giving Tree at St. Gaspar.
Surviving are three daughters, Angela (Greg Renno) Chester of Fort Wayne, Sarah (Mike) Schultis of Kendallville, and Nadia (Ryan Thompson) Chester of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; a son, Timothy (Cherylyn) Chester of Missoula, Montana; eight grandchildren, Adam, Athena, Ryan, Audrey, Jayma, Rayanne, Malaya, and Simone; three great-grandchildren, Carmen, James, and Milo; two sisters, Beverly (Wade) Castator of Waterloo and Barbara Cassel of Wolcottville; two sisters-in-law, Luanne (Gary) Shull of Kendallville and Beth (Rod) Walter of Huntertown; special foster kids, Gemini Spears of Minnesota, and Judy Starrett of Topeka; special foster grandchildren, Sean, Natalie, Johnie, Lydia, and Nakita; and beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Gaspar Catholic Church, 10871 North State Road 9, Wolcottville.
Burial will follow in St. Gaspar Catholic Cemetery in Rome City.
Visitation will be Monday, October 14, 2024, from 2 to 7 p.m. with a rosary service at 7 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville.
