Nelson W. Harrod, 82, of Kendallville died Monday, December 10, 2007, at 1:01 p.m. in Parkview Noble Hospital where he had been a patient for one day.

Mr. Harrod came to work with his father at The Harrod Company in Kendallville, specializing in roofing, siding, and insulation work. The business closed after 50 years of service to the community.

Mr. Harrod was very active in the community. He was appointed to the Kendallville Board of Zoning Appeals by Mayor Ralph Nash in the early 1960's and continued serving in that capacity until he resigned in 1980.

He served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 86 since February, 1946, and was a life member since 1948 of VFW Post 2749.

Nelson was a member of Faith United Methdoist Church in Kendallville; past Master of the Mason Blue Lodge which he joined in 1946; Yorkrite in 1947; Shrine member since 1972; Scottish Rite member since 1981; member of Kendallville Elks Lodge #1194 since 1953; in 1958 he joined the Kendallville Rotary Club and was recently honored as a Paul Harris Fellow; in May, 1992, he received the Knight of the York Cross of Honor; served as President for three years of the Little Long Lake-Round Lake Association; lifetime member of the Indiana Past Commander's Association Knights Templar; and was named Kendallville's Citizen of the Year in 2002. He and his wife, Sally, have lifetime membership #1 at the Kendallville Windmill Museum, where Nelson served as President in 1992-1993.

He was born January 17, 1925, in Menominee, Michigan, to Sanford & Elizabeth (Nelson) Harrod. On June 13, 1980, he married Sally B. (Brown) Babcock in Kendallville.

Surviving are his wife Sally B. Harrod of Kendallville; one son and daughter-in-law, Byron & Sue Harrod of Williamsburg, Virginia; one daughter and son-in-law, Melanie & Mike Meskel of Santa Anna, California; four stepdaughters and two step sons-in-law, Linda & Robert Kunkel of Kendallville, Terri Babcock of Fort Wayne, Jean Babcock of Fort Wayne, and Diana & Brian Heil of Elkhorn, Wisconsin; three grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and two great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Sanford Harrod, Jr.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 15, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, with Rev. Leon Pomeroy of Faith United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Adrian Nowels, Trent Hamilton, A. Stephen Pyle, Dr. Tom Jansen, Alvin Moore, and Dr. Gerald Warrener. Honorary casketbearers wll be Jack Frederick and Dick Zerkle

Visitation will be Friday, December 14, 2007, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. A candlelite Masonic Lodge service will be held at 8 p.m.

Preferred memorials are to the Kendallville Windmill Museum Endowment Fund.
