IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Matthildur "Mikkie" "Maggy"
Kimmel
March 6, 1946 – October 19, 2025
Matthildur "Mikkie" "Maggy" Kimmel, 79, went home to be with Jesus early in the morning on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at her home. Mikkie spent her final days surrounded by many loving family and friends, and in her final moments, she was held close by her daughter and granddaughter as she peacefully went home to be with the Lord.
Matthildur Kristjana Óladóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland on March 6th 1946, Mikkie's story began halfway across the world — where a young U.S. Marine named Robert, "Bob" Kimmel met her while stationed there. A few months after Bob returned to the United States, Mikkie bravely traveled alone to Parris Island, South Carolina, where Bob was stationed at the time. They then married in Beaufort, South Carolina March of 1965, beginning a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, and faith. Mikkie often said he brought her home as his souvenir — a treasure he cherished for the rest of her life. They raised three children: the late Robert "Rob"Kimmel, Sonya Alquran, and Matthew "Matt" Kimmel.
Mikkie was a woman of endless love, strength, and generosity. She had a heart of gold and a gift for caring for others. Whether she was cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, or simply lending a listening ear, she poured her heart into everything she did. She worked as a talented seamstress for many years and lovingly spent much of her time caring for and babysitting her grandchildren, who were her whole world. To know her was truly to love her — she was "Nana"/Mamaw not only to her own grandchildren but to so many others who were blessed by her kindness and warmth.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. Mikkie loved attending Liberty Freewill Baptist Church, where she joyfully served the Lord and found comfort among her church family. Her love for Jesus shined brightly in everything she did, and her faith gave her the strength to face life's hardest moments with grace and peace.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert "Bob" Kimmel; her children, Sonya (Hashem) Alquran and Matthew "Matt" (Amanda) Kimmel; her grandchildren, Bethany (Brock) Fletcher, Brittany Blackburn, Justin Alquran, Jordan Alquran, Janae Alquran, Mason Kimmel and Marcus Kimmel; her great-grandsons, Jason Blackburn, Seth Fletcher, Silas Fletcher; her only great-granddaughter, Kinsley Alquran; Her sister, Aldis Einars; 4 wonderful sister in laws, Donna Bolinger, Carolyn Barner, Norma Tomlinson, and Erlene Kimmel, many cousins, nieces, and nephews
She is preceded in death by her Mother and father from Iceland, her Father and Mother in law: Ray and Evelyn Kimmel, her beloved son: Robert "Rob" Kimmel, her Granddaughter: Adrianne Kimmel, and her sister Daisy Fureigh.
Mikkie will be remembered as the heart of her family — a devoted wife, mother, nana, mamaw, sister, and friend whose love knew no limits. Her gentle spirit, laughter, faith, and unwavering love will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
Graveside services for Matthildur "Mikkie" Kimmel will be held Friday, October 24, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Swan Cemetery, near the intersection of Old State Road 3 and 300 S, LaOtto with Pastor Billy Fields officiating.
