Marjorie Berniece Conard, 95, of Kendallville died at 7:18 pm on Friday, April 4, 2008, at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville. She had resided at Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla for 10 years, and prior to that was a lifetime resident of Kendallville.
Miss Conard was a 1930 graduate of Kendallville High School, a 1932 graduate of Ball State Teachers College in Muncie with a two-year elementary education certification, and a 1957 graduate of Ball State with a bacherlor's degree in education. She was an elementary school teacher for first, second and third grades at Hudson for six years. She taught first and second grade at Wayne Center for 28 years, first grade at Kendallville Central School for five years, and first grade at North Side Elementary for five years, teaching a total of 44 years.
She was a member and past president of the Beta Chapter of Tri Kappa in Kendallville, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Area Teachers Association of Northeast Indiana, and the Noble County Retired Teachers Association. While in high school, she played four years on the basketball and volleyball teams, and was the girl's athletic editor for the yearbook. She was city tennis champion in 1930, city golf runnerup in 1936, received a life guard certificate in 1932, and swam across Bixler Lake that year.
She has been a member of the First Christian Church in Kendallville since 1921, was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years, sang in the choir for 50 years, and sang in a ladies trio with her sister, Hilda Kimmell, and Ruth Hamilton for 50 years, and was a long time member of the church missionary guild. She was proud of the fact that all six members of her family sang in the church choir together for several years.
She was born September 22, 1912, in Kendallville to Clarence Everett and Wilberetta (Williams) Conard.
She was preceded in death by a brother, C. Sheldon Conard, and two sisters, Corinne Isabel Conard and Hilda Conard Kimmell.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at 11 am at the Young Family Funeral Home, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, with Pastor Robert Farmer officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville. Honorary casketbearers will be Suzanne Mustard-Coffman, Duane Hanes, Carl Root, Tom Aumsbaugh, Richard Garrison, and Jack Mortimore. Active casketbearers will be Jack Frederick, Donald Skinner, Robert Haney, John Shank, John Heitz, and Keith Nesbitt.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 8, 2008, from 5 to 7 pm and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Preferred memorials are to the First Christian Church, 110 West Waits Road, Kendallville, Indiana, 46755.
