Margaret Joan "Maggie" Tarney Ewing, 75, of Kendallville died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She had been a patient there for the past week.
Mrs. Ewing was a lifetime area resident, and graduated from Kendallville High School. She retired from The News-Sun in Kendallville after 35 years. She started working on October 3, 1965. She worked in composing, as a receptionist, was the classified advertising manager for eight years, sold display advertising, and in 1977 became the Lifestyle editor and obituary writer. Prior to that she worked for Indiana Bell Telephone for 4 ½ years.
She was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist, Kendallville where she was active in music as a pianist for the "8:30 Singers" and the Kids' Club. She was a member since 1960 of the Charm and Chatter Extension Homemakers' Club, serving as past president, secretary, and was in charge of publicity. Since 1982, she was on the board of directors of the Kendallville Day Care Center where she served as secretary and was in charge of publicity. She was a life member of the McCray Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and did publicity for them. She was a 16-year member of the Kendallville Business & Professional Women's Club, serving as vice president, secretary, and in charge of publicity. She was a member and secretary of the Noble County Mental Health Association; member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 86; VFW Auxiliary Post #2749; and Gene Stratton Porter Society. In April, 1996, she was made an honorary lifetime member of the Kendallville Jaycees, the only non-member to earn that honor. She also did the publicity for the American Red Cross bloodmobiles for many years, and had volunteered at the hospital and CompreCare Home Health.
Maggie enjoyed her family, people in general, her church, children and animals, music and playing the piano, raising and loving her Yorkshire terriers, crocheting, sewing, crossword puzzles, reading and television.
She was born May 27, 1933, in Kendallville to Dale M. and Harriet (Prentice) Eshelman. They preceded her in death. On March 21, 1953, in Kendallville she married Warren E. Tarney, Jr. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1993. On November 25, 2000, in Kendallville she married Robert Ewing. He survives in Kendallville.
Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Steven Tagtmeyer of Gulf Shores, Alabama; a son and daughter-in-law, Jon J. and Jill L. Tarney of LaGrange; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Kennedy of Garrett; two stepsons and their spouses, Steven P. and Connie Ewing of Waynesdale, Ohio, and Robert T. and Carol Ewing of Churubusco; eight grandchildren, Danielle Tagtmeyer, Ashley Tarney, Aislinn Tarney, Sean Tarney, Andrea Sibert, Luke Sibert, Isaac Tyler Tarney, and Alyse Nicole Tarney; seven step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Frank Austin of Crown Point.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Church United Methodist, Kendallville with Rev. G. Scott Pattison officiating. Private graveside services will be at Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Calling is Thursday, May 21, 2009, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Preferred memorials are to the Humane Society of Noble County, Kendallville Food Pantry, or the Kendallville Day Care Center.
