IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lucille M.
Stees
March 13, 1916 – January 16, 2012
Lucille M Stees, 95, of Goshen died Monday, January 16, 2012, in Greencroft Healthcare where she has been a resident since March, 2005.
Mrs. Stees was born the daughter of Michael L. and Ethel (Wise) Fahr on March 13, 1916 in Orangeville, Illinois, where she grew up and graduated from high school.
She was married to Hervey Stees, March 18, 1934. in Dixon, Illinois. They were married for 59 years until his death in 1992.
She was also preceded in death by her father, Michael L. Fahr and her mother, Ethel (Wise) Fahr, and a sister, Lola (Fahr) Wohlford.
Mrs. Stees contributed to the war effort during WWII by working as a riveter making cartridge belts. It was hard and dangerous work. Some girls riveted their fingers, but she was careful and lucky to avoid that experience. In November of 1948, she and her husband bought Hill's Dairy in Winchester, Indiana and operated it as Hillside Dairy for several years. Together they owned and operated the Hallowed Kow Dairy Store and restaurant. Later they sold the dairy and converted the dairy store into an IGA grocery. Eventually, they followed Lucille's interest in antiques and the store became the Tabernae antique and gift shop. Lucille became interested in knitting by machine, sold a wide line of knitting machines, taught classes and knitted most of her own clothes.
For many years, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winchester and also attended evening services at the Farmland Friends Church, Farmland, IN.
She is survived by a son, Gary (Gayle) Stees of Wolcottville; four grandchildren, Michael L. (Lisa) Stees, of Sedalia, MO, Alicia (Daryl) Collins, of Delaware, OH, Vance W (Alesia) Stees of Goshen and Julianna (Oscar) Bowers of LaGrange; 8 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Calling for the public will be Saturday, January 21, 2012, from noon to 2 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville. A private funeral service will immediately follow. Interment will be in Louisa Cemetery, Lena, Illinois.
