Lewie Dale Slone, 73, of Kendallville, Indiana, died Saturday, May 22, 2021 of ALS. While he always considered Kendallville home, he spent his final years in the loving care of his daughter's family in Toledo, Ohio.
He was born December 22, 1947, in Wayland, Kentucky, to Herbert and Daisy (Chaffins) Slone.
Lewie honorably served in Vietnam in the U.S. Army from December 11, 1967, to November 17, 1969.
Mr. Slone retired after 35 years with Kraft Foods in Kendallville where he was a welder.
Lewie was an avid runner and loved to hike and travel. He was optimistic and adventurous and ready to try new things. Always with a big smile on his face, he was liked by all who were lucky enough to meet him.
He was a lifetime member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749 and the Rome City American Legion Post 381. He was a member of the Veterans Honor Guard.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Theo Wenger of Toledo, Ohio; a grandson, Elijah Wenger; a sister, Carolyn Hicks of Kendallville; and his significant other, Marlene Martin of Kendallville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Elvita Mullins.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 28, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville.
Burial will follow at Orange Cemetery near Rome City.
Honor guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard and active duty members of the U.S. Army.
Visitation is Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials may be directed to Kendallville VFW Post 2749.
