Joseph Leroy Shire, 85, of Hudson, Indiana, died Monday, October 23, 2023, at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester.

He was born January 26, 1938, in Hudson, to Guy and Hildred (Clark) Shire.

On February 14, 1959, in LaMasa, California he married Joy Dottie Lavender. She preceded him in death on September 14, 2019.

He honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. Shire worked as an inspector at Auburn Gear in Auburn.

He was a life member of the Hudson United Methodist Church, and a member of the Moose. He had also been a baseball coach in Hudson.

Joseph enjoyed fishing, hunting and NASCAR racing.

Surviving are a daughter, Sally (Stan) Bala of Parma, Michigan; two sons, Gary (Tracy) Shire of New Sacramento, California and Jeff Shire of Ashley; four grandchildren, Jerik Shire, Amber Shire, Zachary Musser, and Jeremy Beechler; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Lee Smith of Hudson.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Randy Shire; a grandson, Calob Mikel Musser; a sister, Mary Jean Saffen; and three brothers, Ted Shire, Robert Shire, and Russel Shire.

Visitation will be Friday, October 27, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Hudson-Ashley Chapel, 612 North Main Street, Hudson.

The funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Andrew Sexton officiating.

Burial will follow at Circle Cemetery near Hudson.
