Obituary

John Albert Wappes, 74, of Rome City died Thursday, March 3, 2016, in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne following a short illness.

He had lived at Sylvan Lake for 27 years, coming from LaOtto.

A 1959 of North Side High School in Fort Wayne, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1967.

John retired after 47 years with the Norfolk Southern Railroad where he was an engineer and yard master.

He was a member of the Rome City American Legion Post 381 and Kendallville VFW Post 2749. John was an active member of the Honor Guard.

John dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, being outdoors, and cooking.

He was born October 23, 1941, in Fort Wayne to Myron and Joan (Beltz) Wappes.

On January 23, 1982, he married Nancy J. Renkenberger. She survives at Rome City.

Also surviving are a daughter, Michelle (Dennis Phelps) Rodriguez of Fort Wayne; a son, Tim (Elizabeth) Wappes of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, Nicole Krider, Chase Rodriguez, Samantha Rodriguez, Joshua (Abigail) Wappes, Ethan Wappes, and Isaac Wappes; three great-grandchildren, Courtney Hargis, Anthony Krider, and Maxwell John Krider; and a brother, Steve (Becky) Wappes of LaGrange.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Myron "Mike" Wappes; and a nephew, Zachary Wappes.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Pastor Regan Ford of the First Church of God in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be in Orange Cemetery, Rome City.

Honor guard services will be provided by American Legion Post 381, VFW Post 2749, American Legion Post 86, and active duty members of the armed services.

Pallbearers will be Chase Rodriguez, Joshua Wappes, Ethan Wappes, Isaac Wappes, Ross Dietzer, and Jim Reick.

Calling is Tuesday, March 8, 2016, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the Humane Society of Noble County.
