John R. Roush, 71, of Dallas Lake Wolcottville died Thursday, October 8, 2015, at 6:35 a.m. in his residence following a lengthy illness.
He had lived in this area most of his life.
Mr. Roush graduated from the Wolcottville High School, Taylor University in Upland, and received his Master's Degree from St. Francis University in Fort Wayne.
While at Taylor University, he excelled at football and track, participating in javelin and shot put. He held a school record for shot put from 1964 to 1967.
Mr. Roush retired in 1999 as the Athletic Director for Prairie Heights High School, where he was a football, track, and wrestling coach. Most of his career was as a math teacher at Prairie Heights High School. He was also the sponsor of the National Honor Society and head of driver's education for Prairie Heights. His teaching career began in 1968 at the Milford Elementary School.
He was a member of the Sturgis Wesleyan Church in Sturgis, Michigan, the Gideon's in LaGrange, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Wednesday morning prayer group at the LaGrange Methodist Church, and the LaGrange Country Club.
John enjoyed music, singing, boating, golfing, and dearly loved his grandchildren.
He was born August 17, 1944, in Kokomo to Rev. Carroll W. and Ruth (Lockner) Roush.
On August 31, 1968, in Trainer, Pennsylvania, he married Ruth E. "Libby" Jackson. She survives on Dallas Lake.
Also surviving are a son, Jon E. Roush of Wolcottville; a daughter, Reneé E. Roush Lozano of Wolcottville; two grandchildren, Monica R. Lozano of Fort Wayne and Cole A. Lozano of Lima, Ohio; and a brother, Robert E. "Bob" (Dena) Roush of Shipshewana.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 12, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville with Rev. Lawrence Byrnes, Rev. Russell Hepler and Rev. Ryan Bibbs of the Sturgis Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Wolcottville.
Calling is Sunday, October 11, 2015, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Preferred memorials are to Heartland Hospice or the Sturgis Wesleyan Church.
