Joan E. Crothers, 80, of Kendallville died Saturday, December 12, 2009, at 5:26 p.m. in Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Mrs. Crothers graduated from Kendallville High School in 1947. She attended Faith United Methodist Church. Her working career included 21 years as a waitress at Cafe Johnell in Fort Wayne.

She was an avid quilter, enjoyed playing games, collected cardinals, and was a fan of all Indiana sports teams, especially Indiana and Purdue Universities. Starting when her son, Scott, was in high school, she enjoyed spending the rest of her life following the East Noble Marching Knights and the Angola Hornets Marching Band.

She was born May 1, 1929, in Kendallville to Joe E. and Ruth I. (Becker) Trowbridge. On October 13, 1948, in Kendallville, she married Norman H. Crothers, who survives in Kendallville.

Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Robert Shippy of Fort Wayne; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Kim Crothers of Syracuse; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Miller-Crothers Kern of Kendallville; five grandchildren, R. Andrew Shippy of Fort Wayne, Kathryn Shippy-Ziegler and Ryan Ziegler of Fort Wayne, Abigail Crothers Brendel and R. Baron Brendel of Lafayette, Julie Crothers of Syracuse, and Jennifer Crothers of Syracuse; her beloved great grandson, Jack Ziegler and a future great grandchild due in June, 2010 by Abby and Baron; her twin sister, Jeanne Harrod of Kendallville; and a sister-in-law, Lynn Trowbridge Volmar of Muncie.

She was preceded in death by a son, Craig Crothers on September 23, 2004, and a brother, Phillip A. Trowbridge.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Tom Novy of Provena Sacred Heart Home officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Calling will be from 11 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the Parkview Memorial Hospital Blanket Fund.
