Jeffrey R. Mountz, 69, a lifetime area resident, died Thursday, February 9, 2017, in his residence.
He was born June 6, 1947 in Kendallville to Omar Edward and Helen (Reith) Mountz.
Jeff graduated from Kendallville High School in 1965. He honorably served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1969, at one point patrolling the DMZ in Korea under occasional fire.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2004 after 32 years of perfect attendance.
He was a member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749, Kendallville American Legion Post 86 and St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville.
Jeff enjoyed making model cars and raising chickens, ducks, and rabbits. His passion was animals of all kinds. He was ever loyal to the Cleveland Browns and enjoyed NASCAR racing, especially the early years.
On May 21, 1994, in Kendallville he married his best friend, Suzanne Cates.
Surviving are his wife, Suzanne Mountz of Kendallville, a daughter, Jenni (Adam) Strack of Fort Wayne; two sons, John Mountz of Kendallville, and Bradley (Amanda) Mountz of Kendallville; his mother, Helen Mountz of Fort Wayne; a sister, Deborah (Bob) Arnold of Fort Wayne; a brother, Craig (Sandie) Mountz of Brentwood, Tennessee; 7 grandchildren, Taylor Mountz, Kayla Mountz, Chloe Mountz, Abigail Mountz, Breanna Strack, Brooke Strack, and Brecken Strack; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Sorensen of Kendallville; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father in 1991, and many much loved animal companions; in particular, Ginger, in 2016, known by many as a very special dog.
Per Jeff's adamant and fervent wish, funeral arrangements will be as humble, simple, and casual as possible. Feel free to come as you choose.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 4 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State St, Kendallville.
Honor guard services will be provided by Kendallville VFW Post 2749, Kendallville American Legion Post 86, Rome City American Legion Post 381, and active duty members of the U.S. Air Force.
Calling is Saturday, February 18, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Noble County, 1305 Sherman St, Kendallville, Indiana, 46755 or any VA facility.
