James Andrew "Jim" VanWinkle, 67, of Kendallville, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at Gordon's Campground near South Milford where he had a seasonal campsite.

He was born October 19, 1955, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to John Paul and Betty (Harbin) VanWinkle.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. VanWinkle worked at Colwell in Kendallville.

He was a past member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749 and a past member of Kendallville American Legion Post 86 where he was a member of the Freedom Riders.

Jim had a heart of gold, as he would do anything for anyone. His family remembers him for having the best personality, teaching them to always take time to listen, don't sweat the small things, and live life to the fullest. He was loud and proud, laughing all the time, didn't know a stranger, and always had a smile on his face. Jim loved his dogs, camping, cooking, but, especially, loved his family and friends.

Surviving are a daughter, Jessica (Dan) Pierce of Kendallville; a son, Zachary (Stefan van Elsacker) VanWinkle of Berlin, Germany; two grandchildren, Damon Pierce and Jayden Pierce; a sister, Sandy Harback of Phoenix, Arizona; several nieces and nephews; and his companion, Jennifer Donnaker of Kendallville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John VanWinkle, who passed away on September 14, 2023, and Bill VanWinkle; and a sister, Cathy Henderson.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 120 Weston Avenue, Kendallville.

Preferred memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Noble County.
