Obituary

James Albert Havert, 76, of Rome City died peacefully in his home Friday, May 6, 2011, from a long-term illness.

Mr. Havert retired in 1998 from Silgan Plastics, formerly Monsanto, in Ligonier.

He honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1961.

He was a member of St. Gaspar Catholic Church, Rome City and American Legion Post 381 in Rome City.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing, taxidermy, spending time with his grandchildren, playing Bingo, and dancing.

He was born November 30, 1934, in Chicago to Albert and Cleo (Grott) Havert. On June 4, 1959, in Chicago he married Catherine M. Whelan

Surviving are his wife, Catherine M. Havert of Rome City; a daughter, Candy (Phil) Slone of Kendallville; two sons, Tim (Lorie) Havert of Angola and Nik (Mandy) Havert of Nappanee; ten grandchildren, Amanda Schieber, Cody Havert, Andrew Havert, Rocky Havert, Patrick Havert, Crystal Patton, Josh Havert, Trevor Slone, Eric Slone, and Marrissa Slone; eight great grandchildren, Jackson Schieber, Makenzie Schieber, Ethan Schieber, Rocky Havert, Jr., Alan Havert, Taylor Havert, Liam Beyer, and a great grandson Beyer due in June; two sisters, Carol (Mike) DiPalma of New Jersey and Barbara Baka of Kendallville; and a brother, Michael (Evie) Havert of Slidell, Lousiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Cindy Havert, and a granddaughter, April Havert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at 11 a.m. in St. Gaspar Catholic Church, Rome City, with Father Jim Miller officiating. Honor guard services will be conducted by American Legion Post 381, Rome City and active duty members of the U.S. Air Force.

Casketbearers will be Josh Havert, Patrick Havert, Cody Havert, Andrew Havert, Trevor Slone, and Eric Slone.

Calling is Monday, May 9, 2011, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the church. A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Calling will also be one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Preferred memorials are to the family.
