James Franklin "Jim" Ebert, 73, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Kendallville died Friday, February 26, 2021, at his residence.
He was born August 31, 1947, in Kendallville to Edward and Betty (Gillespie) Ebert.
He was a 1968 graduate of East Noble High School.
On November 29, 1968, in Kendallville he married Cheryl Christine "Chris" Fiandt.
Mr. Ebert began working for the Kendallville Police Department and served as a volunteer fireman for the Kendallville Fire Department from 1968 to 1975. In 1975, he became a full-time fireman for the Kendallville Fire Department and was later named Fire Chief, retiring in 2005. He then was the Fire Chief at the Orange Township Fire Department. Jim served a total of 38 years as a fireman.
He was a member of the Kendallville Church of God and the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association.
Jim enjoyed fishing and camping and dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Chris Ebert of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Kimberly Ebert of Fort Wayne; two sons, Troy Ebert of New Haven and Jason (Krysten) Ebert of Garrett; eight grandchildren, Ryan Ebert, Audrey Ebert, Lacey McKibben-Ebert, Joe McKibben-Ebert, Jillian McKibben-Ebert, Taylor Ebert, Addison Ebert, and Natalie Ebert; a sister, Susie Boese of Kendallville; and three brothers, Dick (Sue) Cross of Kendallville, Bill (Roxanne) Ebert of Kendallville, and Tom Ebert of Kendallville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Michael Ebert, Dick Ebert, and Bob Ebert.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Pastor David Hill of The Bridge Community Church in Decatur officiating.
Burial will follow at Orange Cemetery near Rome City.
Honorary pallbearers are Troy Ebert, Jason Ebert, Dick Ebert, Bill Ebert, Tom Ebert, Mike Fiandt, and Todd Fiandt. Active pallbearers are members of the Kendallville Fire Department and the Orange Township Fire Department.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 2, 2021, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. A Fireman's Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Per the Governor, face masks are required.
