Obituary

Jack Arlen Young, 85, formerly of West Lafayette, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2020 in San Antonio, TX from complications of Covid-19.

Born November 2, 1934 in Kendallville, IN to Glenn D. and Mina A. (Weeks) Young, Jack graduated as a 3-sport athlete from Albion High School ('52) before embarking on a lifetime of being a Purdue Boilermaker.

On June 2, 1956, he married Judith Jean Jacobs. She preceded him in death on January 16, 1997. Surviving the couple are son Jay (Melynn) Young of San Antonio, TX, daughter Jana (Brian) Tyrrell of Olympia, WA, and son Jed (Erin) Young of Boerne, TX; grandchildren Jeremy and Travis Young, Jacob and Megan Tyrrell, and Jack, Hope and Lauren Young; and great-grandchildren Avery and Grayson Tyrrell. A brother, Hal G. Young, also preceded him in death.

After graduating from Purdue University, Jack worked for the Boys Clubs of America, and as Director of Parks & Recreation for the city of Michigan City, IN, before embarking in 1967 on a lifetime of service to his alma mater. During his Purdue tenure, he worked for Purdue Musical Organizations as Administrative Assistant to the Director, as the Associate Director of the Alumni Scholarship Foundation, and as the Deferred Giving Officer for University Development. He served as the advisor for Purdue Crew, Skull & Crescent Honorary and for his beloved Purdue Grand Prix. He completed his professional career in University Development for UW-Superior.

Jack was an avid outdoorsman, a member of Rotary International, and a decades-long member of the John Purdue Club. He held season tickets through four basketball and ten football head coaches. He also coached scores of kids in local summer baseball programs, and alongside Judy, could always be found in the crowd supporting his kids throughout their scholastic, athletic and musical endeavors.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 12, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion.

Honorary pallbearers are Megan Tyrrell, Hope Young, and Lauren Young. Active pallbearers are Jeremy Young, Travis Young, Jacob Tyrrell, Jack Young, Dave Fuhrman, Mike Brennan, Eric Juliot, and Mark Legan.

Visitation is Friday, September 11, 2020, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Purdue Grand Prix Alumni organization.
