Jack D. Newkirk, 85, of New Haven and formerly of Kendallville died Friday, November 13, 2015, in Park Place Senior Living in Fort Wayne.
He was born December 27, 1929, as the only child of Jesse and Ruby (George) Newkirk.
Mr. Newkirk spent most of his life in the lumber business. He was the owner of Kendall Lumber Company in Kendallville before moving to Fort Wayne in 1976. He then became a lumber dealer for HWI main headquarters in New Haven.
He was co-developer of a land/housing subdivision in Topeka and Little Long Lake area in Kendallville.
Jack attended Antioch College. He honorably served in the Korean War as an Army Sergeant in the 705th AAA Gun Battalion.
He was a member of American Legion Post 409 in Leo. He was past president of the Rotary Club and past member of the Elks, Moose, and VFW.
Jack highly valued his family and close friends. He loved outdoor projects, golf, IU basketball, and fishing at his weekend lake home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 2008, after 55 years of marriage.
Surviving are a daughter, Tina Clark of Leo; a son, Jeffrey (Angi) Newkirk of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 1 p.m. in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville with Rev. Ron Collins officiating. Honor guard services will be provided by American Legion Post 409, Leo and active duty members of the US military.
