Jack H. Mortimore, 85, of Kendallville passed quietly with his family at his side Saturday, January 7, 2012, at 11:17 p.m. in Kendallville Manor HealthCare Center, Kendallville where he had resided for four days. He had been ailing since the death of his wife last July.

He was a lifetime area resident. He and his wife wintered in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for 18 years.

He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan.

Mr. Mortimore started his career in the propane gas business with Seagly Brothers in Kendallville, working in delivery and sales. Upon the sale of the business, he remained with the new owners, and retired in 1984 from Valero Energy of San Antonio, Texas, as a sales representative.

He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Kendallville where he served as deacon, elder, trustee, and church board president. He was also a member of the Kendallville Lions Club, Kendallville American Legion Post 86, and a life member of Kendallville VFW Post 2749.

Jack's hobbies included woodworking, bird watching, antiquing, working in the yard, and being outside. He was an avid fan of IU basketball. He especially enjoyed attending sporting events of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved being together with family in the home he and his wife built 60 years ago.

He was born June 24, 1926, in Kendallville to Mike and Blanche (Gretzinger) Mortimore. On April 14, 1945, in Garrett, he married Beverly J. Hinkley. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2011.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and David Bryant of Kendallville; three granddaughters, Rhonda Black of Fort Wayne, Cecelee and Chad Shuck of South Milford, and Beverly Bryant and John Crover of Huntertown; three great grandchildren, Joel David Busche, Bryant Walter-Shuck, and Hannah Marie Black; a sister-in-law, Barbara and Bill Smith of Columbia City; several nieces and nephews; his Lima Road friends and neighbors; and his coffee buddies at the Kendallville VFW.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Tyler and a brother, Homer Mortimore.

There will be no calling or services. A memorial service will be announced at a later date for both he and his wife. Military honor services will be provided by Kendallville VFW Post 2749 and Rome City American Legion Post 381.

Preferred memorials in Jack's name may be directed to Parkview Noble Hospice or First Christian Church Building Fund. Envelopes are available at or you may mail contributions to Young Family Funeral Home.
