Jack E. Berhalter, 86, of Kendallville died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at 6:05 p.m. in Provena Sacred Heart Home, Avilla.

Mr. Berhalter, a lifetime area resident, had worked 25 years at Puritan Ice Cream, two years at Berhalter Furniture Store, eight years as head custodian at East Noble High School, and ten years at Berhalter-Hutchins Funeral Home (now Young Family Funeral Home) all in Kendallville.

He graduated from Kendallville High School in 1941, and enjoyed participating on the reunion committee. He was a World War II Army veteran. He served in Patton's Third Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as an usher for many years, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, and Kendallville American Legion Post 86. For many years he enjoyed attending his annual army reunion, which was held in many states across the country.

He was born March 26, 1923, in Kendallville to Thurlow A. and Dessie Belle (Gloyd) Berhalter. On November 18, 1945, he married Edith J. Froelich. She preceded him in death June 22, 1952. On September 13, 1953, he married Betty J. Bailey.

Surviving are his wife, Betty J. Berhalter of Kendallville; two sons and daughters-in-law, T. Alan and Cindy Berhalter of Kendallville and Dennis and Mary Berhalter of San Antonio, TX; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John Anible of Jenison, Michigan, and Cheryl and Howard Mapes of Kendallville; eight grandchildren, Tim and Sherry Berhalter of Kendallville, John Anible II of Jenison, Michigan, Danielle Anible of Jenison, Michigan, Jenny and Jason Pease of Kendallville, Tiffany and Robert Nichols of Kendallville, Katie Anible of Brooklyn, New York, Art and Kentrina Mapes of Kendallville, Laura Mapes of Auburn; 11 great grandchildren, Toni Berhalter, Derek Berhalter, Sierra Stout, Logan Pease, Kyndal Pease, Ashley Nichols, Becca Nichols, Kendaya Mapes, Tyler Mapes, Haydyn Mapes, Lucas Mapes; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Berhalter of Kendallville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe G. Berhalter on February 4, 2007, a grandson Ty Alan Berhalter, and a great granddaughter Kensyngten Parks Mapes.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 11:00 am in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Dr. Robert Shriner of St. John Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville. Military graveside services will be provided by Kendallville VFW Francis Vinyard Post 2749.

Casketbearers will be Tim Berhalter, John Anible II, Jason Pease, Robert Nichols, Art Mapes, and Derek Berhalter.

Calling is Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and Wednesday, July 15, 2009, from 10 to 11 am at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, an exclusive provider for "Veterans and Family Memorial Care".

Preferred memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church or Common Grace.
