Gertrude Bolen-Sawyer (Tackett) was welcomed into her Savior’s arms on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. She was born March 25, 1934, to Sheridan and Sarah (Hall) Tackett in Floyd County, Kentucky.
Gertie, as she was known, married Shelton Bolen on December 24, 1953. They moved to the Kendallville area and raised 4 children, Sheridan, Betty, Earl, and David. Shelton preceded her in death in 2003.
She later married Samuel Sawyer on February 3, 2006. He preceded her in death on August 3, 2011.
Gertie’s greatest joy was her relationship with God. Second to that was her love for her family. She was a shining example of God’s love and grace. To know Gertie was to be loved whether you were family, her wonderful church family, friends, or a stranger in the store. She knew the power of prayer. Gertie was a prayer warrior that took many battles to her Lord for anyone in need. She was also a mentor and friend to so many. She was a true example of a Proverbs 31 woman.
Gertie is survived by her sons, Sheridan (Joyce) Hall of Waterloo, Earl Bolen of Stroh, and David Bolen of Wolcottville; 21 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 19 great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walker (Willa) Tackett of Kendallville and Charlie (Anna) Tackett of Nicholasville, Kentucky; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Sheridan and Sarah Tackett; a daughter, Betty Dangler; two daughters-in-law, Jewell Bolen and Teresa Bolen; a son-in-law, Donny Dangler; two sisters, Sola Williams and Ruthie Hunter; and eight brothers, Freel Tackett, Garrett Tackett, Jay Tackett, Lee Hunter, Robert Tackett, Earl Tackett, Johnny Tackett, and Joseph Tackett.
