Local businessman, Gerald L. Mefferd, Sr., 79, of Kendallville died Sunday, March 10, 2013, in his residence.

He has lived in this area most of his life and graduated from Kendallville High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 where he was a heavy equipment mechanic.

Mr. Mefferd owned Mefferd's Cities Service and founded Kendallville Auto Parts on Main Street in Kendallville in 1973, operating the store for 40 years.

He was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist and a former member of the Jaycees of Kendallville.

Gerald enjoyed beekeeping.

He was born on August 26, 1933 in Haviland, Ohio to Gilbert & Helen (Reid) Mefferd. On April 18, 1954 in South Milford United Methodist Church, South Milford he married Doris Elizabeth Lee. They were honored to enjoy 58 years together.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Mefferd of Kendallville; a son, Gerald Lowell Mefferd, Jr. of Rome City; three daughters, Victoria Elizabeth (Clint) Wease of Wasilla, Alaska, Toni Lee Michaud of Anchorage, Alaska, and Melinda Mae Duehmig of Louisville, Kentucky; ten grandchildren, Dawn Oiler of Kendallville, Gilbert Mefferd of Kendallville, Kelly (Ben) Hecker of New York, Ralph (Crissy) Wease of Alaska, Jake (Amanda) Wease of Alaska, Jason Michaud of Pennsylvania, Kacie (Ross) Turner of Alaska, John Michaud of Alaska, Shauna Duehmig of Kentucky and Derek Duehmig of Kentucky; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Joanne Sibert of Kendallville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carolyn Mefferd; and a brother, Byron Wayne Mefferd.

According to Gerald's wishes there will be no visitation or services.

Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville is assisting the family with arrangements.
