George Thomas McFarland, Jr., age 83, of Kendallville passed away Friday, April 15, 2011, in Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.

He was born March 24, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio, to George T. McFarland, Sr. and Margaret (Curran) McFarland. He graduated from Macomber High School in Toledo in 1945. He joined the U.S. Army January 1, 1945 and served as a duck boat driver with the 460th Transportation Corps Amphibian Truck Company through the end of WW II. He was discharged at Ft. Eustis, VA, May 1, 1947.

He married Nina R. Turner on March 1, 1957, in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him death on January 3, 1993.

Mr. McFarland was employed with the U.S. Postal Service where he worked in the Motor Vehicle Service Section. He retired in 1989 after 35 years of service. He was awarded a gold plaque membership in the One Million Mile Club for having no accidents during his employment. George drove stock cars in his younger years and still enjoyed watching NASCAR. He enjoyed reading and loved having his grandchildren and great grandchildren visit his Walden Woods lakeside campsite in Steuben County.

Surviving are a son, Mark T. McFarland of Toledo, OH; stepchildren, Carol (Keith) Hart of Kendallville, IN, Patrick (Linda) Barrett of Charlotte, NC, and Colleen Barrett of Holly Springs, MS; step grandchildren, Kevin (Shaun) Hart of Clear Lake, IN, Craig (Janet) Hart of Wolcottville, IN, Bruce Hart of Kendallville, IN Jon Barrett of Gastonia, NC, Kelly (Andy) Hooper of Charlotte, NC, and Brooke Bodie of Glendale, CA; step great grandchildren, Alex Hart, Kaylie Hart, Wolcottville, IN, David Hart, Hannah Hart, Kendallville, IN Jared Sirk, Jacob Sirk, and Reagan Hart, Clear Lake, IN, Kasey Barrett, Jillian Barrett, Gastonia, NC, and Landen Brooks, Ansley Brooks, Charlotte, NC.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, half brother, Mel Shanklin; brother, Richard McFarland; and sisters, Catherine McFarland and Mary Blair.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 18, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, with Rev. Dr. Robert Shriner of St. John Lutheran Church, Kendallville officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Highland Memory Gardens in Waterville, Ohio.

Calling is Sunday, April 17, 2011, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to the St. John Lutheran Church or Parkview Noble Hospice.
