Celebration of life service will be held at a later date. ****************************************************************************** Gene Marvin Lampe, Avilla, passed away January 8, 2014 at home with family members by his side. Born on September 4, 1938, to Eva (Johnson) and Marvin Lampe, Gene resided in the Fort Wayne/Noble County area his entire life except for military service. After graduating from Northside High School in 1956, he served in the US Army in Germany until 1960.
In 1961, he married the love of his life, Kaye Allyne Kagey, and together they raised two children, Scott and Kristy. Gene retired from GTE in 1999 after 33 years of service.
Curious and analytical, Gene was a life-long learner who enjoyed tracking statistics on anything from bird counts to weather trends and tinkering with tools and gadgets. He loved music and played guitar in various bands and at church, along with Kaye on accordion or keyboard. Gene was a talented musician who was known for his improvisational abilities. He also enjoyed motorcycling, backyard birding, camping, clocks of all types, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kaye in Avilla; son, Scott (Tina) in Grand Haven, MI; daughter, Kristy (Steve) Fry in Garrett; sister Marilyn (Dean) Martin in Fort Wayne; grandchildren: Amber (Fry) Manon, Adam Lampe, Kayelyn Fry, Josh Lampe, Corey Fry, Hayelie Fry, Rachel Fry, and step-granddaughter Lindsay Loomis; one great-grandson, Liam Manon; nephews and niece, Mark, Matt, and Michelle; and several other family members and friends.
In accordance with his wishes, Gene's body was donated to the Indiana University School of Medicine Anatomical Education Program.
There will be a celebration of Gene's life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to American Cancer Society, Parkview Hospice, or charity of choice.
Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville is assisting the family with arrangements.
