Obituary

Geary Steven Wertman, 69, of Kendallville died Thursday, January 5, 2017, at 7:15 p.m. in his residence.

He had lived in Kendallville since 2013, coming from Avilla.

Mr. Wertman had worked 27 years for International Harvestor in Fort Wayne and retired as a mechanic for Strawser Bros. in Kendallville. He then owned and operated Wertman Body and Paint in Avilla.

Geary enjoyed restoring tractors, mowing grass to perfection, and gardening. He and his wife also operated Lazy Bones BBQ. They participated in the Avilla Festival and catered for churches and graduation parties.

He was born January 28, 1947, in Auburn to Harold and Leora (Shear) Wertman.

In December, 2007, in Avilla he married Paula M. Refeld. She survives in Kendallville.

Also surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Ann Wertman of Michigan; a son, Geary Steven Wertman of Angola; a sister, Barbara L. Hyer of Leo; two brothers, Max Allen Wertman of Leo and Roger Wertman of Michigan; and his faithful companion, Buster.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffery Lynn Wertman; and a brother, Gale LeRoy Wertman.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Dr. Thomas Clothier of First Christian Church in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Calling is Monday, January 9, 2016, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.
