Gavino C. Olvera, 69, of Rome City died Monday, February 12, 2018, at 5:27 a.m. at the home of his daughter in Decatur.
He was born February 19, 1948, in Donna, Texas, to Ismael and San Juana (Casteñeda) Olvera.
On September 24, 1972, in Rome City he married Jeraldine K. Broom. She survives in Rome City.
Mr. Olvera moved to this area in 1968, coming from Texas.
He was a farm and field worker, as well as a general laborer.
Gavino enjoyed interacting with youth sports and coached little league at Rome City. He loved sports, NASCAR, wrestling and was a fan of Elvis Presley. He dearly loved his grandchildren.
Also surviving are two daughters, Dallas (Tony) James of Decatur and Donna T. Olvera of LaGrange; three sons, Gavino C. (Sarah) Olvera, Jr. of Croton on the Hudson, New York, Gerald C. Olvera of Croton on the Hudson, New York, and Gambit L. (Amanda) Olvera of Fort Riley, Kansas; 13 grandchildren, Alejandro Olvera, Odilon and Katelyn Olvera, Soyla Garcia, Alma Garcia, Gonzalo Garcia, Jr., Enrique Garcia, Austin James, McKenzie James, Sydney Olvera, Hunter Olvera, Lillian Olvera, and Charlotte Olvera; five great-grandchildren, Analina Shea, Branson Olvera, Hudson Roe, Finnley Olvera, and Kingston Olvera; two sisters, Francisca Olvera of Avondale, Arizona and Sara (Luis) Vasquez of Mongo; and two brothers, Ismael Olvera of Avondale, Arizona and Joe (Elaine) Moreno of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Soyla Olvera.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville with Pastor Rich Secor of CrossPointe Family Church of the Nazarene in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be at Orange Cemetery, Rome City.
Casketbearers will be Alejandro Olvera, Odilon Olvera, Austin James, Gonzalo Garcia, Jr., McKenzie James, Enrique Garcia, and Anthony James.
Calling is Friday, February 16, 2018, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Preferred memorials are to the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Rome City.
