Gary Hansel Compton, 82, of Kendallville died Friday, April 27, 2018, at 3:40 a.m. at Lutheran Life Villages, Kendallville.
He was born March 4, 1936, in Grundy, Virginia, to Bruce Allen Compton and Alice (Skeens) Compton Edwards.
Mr. Compton served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea.
On December 24, 1959, he married Birdie Mae Knox. She preceded him in death on February 26, 2017.
He had worked in the shipping department of Essex Wire. He was a member of the Helmer Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Gail (Larry) Cordial-Norton of Butler, Pam Branning of Albion, and Tammy (Vaughn) Halsey of Franklin, Tennessee; four sons, Greg (Karen) Cordial of Kendallville, Bruce (Della Pierce) Compton of Corunna, Duane Scott (Margaret) Compton of Kendallville, and Troy (Melinda) Compton of Kendallville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Delbert L. (Marie) Compton; and two stepsisters, Sinda Jane (Edward) Galat and Diane (Barry) Shultz.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Gabriel Cordial; a daughter, Brenda (Knox) Conley; a son-in-law, Michael Branning; brothers and sisters, Geneveve L. Compton, Murl D. Compton, Earsel B. Compton, Ronnie E. Justice, and Phillip W. Justice; his stepmother, Edna Sybil (Jarvis) Compton; and stepbrothers and stepsisters, Robert Smith, Speed Smith, Margie Lewis, Ethel Lipscomb, Maeo Locklear, and William Smith.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Pastor Willie Collins officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Casketbearers will be his beloved grandchildren.
Honor guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army.
Visitation is Tuesday, May 1, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Helmer Baptist Church or the Humane Society of Noble County.
