She was born February 23, 1912, in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Philip and Daisy (Sartell) Woodward. On August 5, 1932, in Pontiac, Michigan, she married Gerald G. R. Warrener. He preceded her in death on December 1, 1997. Mrs. Warrener graduated from Oakland County Normal school in Pontiac, Michigan in 1930 and taught eight grades in a one-room country school for two years. After marrying, she spent the next thirty years living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where four of her five children were born. While raising her family, she worked in various capacities, including substitute teaching, and owning and operating her own restaurant for several years in Ontonagon, Michigan. After moving to Indianapolis, she graduated from Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis) with a B.S. in elementary education in 1965, and earned her M.S. in education from Butler University in 1971. She taught in Lawrence Township schools for several years before moving to Sylvan Lake in 1975, where her teaching career continued with East Noble schools and the Northeast Indiana Special Education Cooperative. She finished her career as the owner and operator of Rome City Preschool. Prior to moving to Kendallville in 1994, she was active in the Order of Eastern Star and the Rome City United Methodist Church. She served for several years on the board of the Kendallville Public Library and the Gene Stratton Porter society. She has resided at the Chandler House since 2006. Mrs. Warrener was a creative and nurturing mother, grandmother, and teacher who truly loved children, especially the pre-school ages. She was also an avid reader and "lifetime learner" until age and infirmity rendered her no longer capable. She is survived by her five children, Marjorie (John) Bacheldor and Laura (Dave) Hilderley, both of Grand Junction, Colorado, Mary Spencer of Corpus Christie, Texas, Susan (Ron) Gebeau of West Lawn, Pennsylvania, Dr. Gerald (Kara) Warrener of Kendallville, and one brother, Dr. Robert Woodward of Costa Mesa, California. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, eleven of her siblings, and two of her grandchildren, David L. Hilderley II and Sarah Gail Warrener. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville, on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville. Memorial services will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2014, also at the funeral home. A celebration of Gail's life is being planned for later this summer.
