Frederick A. Smith, 82, of Turkey Lake, Hudson died Monday, October 2, 2017, at 2:50 a.m. at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.
He was born May 3, 1935, in Fort Wayne to John and Pearl (Sigafoose) Smith.
On September 1, 1951, in Fort Wayne he married Carroll J. Brees.
Mr. Smith moved to this area in 1970, coming from Fort Wayne.
He worked as a Fort Wayne City Police Officer from October, 1964 until June, 1985 when he retired as Master Sergeant of the Homicide Division.
He was a member of the Helmer United Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Fred enjoyed fishing, golfing, football, racing with his son, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved the time he spent with his church family honoring the Lord.
Surviving are his wife, Carroll J. Smith of Turkey Lake, Hudson; three daughters, Vickey (Cecil) Hamer of Hudson, Barbara Germano of Fort Wayne, and Janet (Marc) Stutzman of Hudson; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Shroyer of Albion.
He was preceded in death by a son, Fred Smith, II, two sisters, and three brothers.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Helmer United Methodist Church in Helmer with Pastor Donna Holcomb officiating. Burial will be in Circle Cemetery, Hudson.
Calling is Wednesday, October 4, 2017, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Hudson-Ashley Chapel, 612 North Main Street, Hudson and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
Preferred memorials are to the Helmer United Methodist Church or to Cancer Services of Fort Wayne.
