Local businessman, Frederick A. "Fred" Manahan, 77, of The Villages, Florida, and formerly of Kendallville died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at 4:10 p.m. in The Villages Hospital in Florida.

He and his wife moved to The Villages, Florida, in 2000 from Kendallville where he had resided since 1956.

He graduated from Defiance High School, Defiance, Ohio, in 1952. He attended Defiance College and graduated in 1956 from Ashland College with a degree in Business.

Mr. Manahan was a U.S. Army veteran and served a number of years in the Army Reserves.

Fred began working in radio as an announcer while still in high school. He worked for a short time for a Toldeo, Ohio, radio station before moving to Kendallville where he was one of the original owners of WAWK radio. He eventually became the sole owner of WAWK and WAWK-FM. He also served as President of Noble TV before selling both businesses.

He was an active member of the Kendallville community. He was Past President of the Kendallville Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Noble County Community Foundation, and the Kendallville Jaycees. He also served as district and state officer in the Jaycees. He was a former member of the Kendallville City Council and Board of Works, Past President and eight year member of the North Conference Trustees for the United Methodist Church. He was a board member of the Kendallville Factory Sites, Kendallville Bank & Trust Company, and the Bashor Home. He served a number of years on the board of Provena Sacred Heart Home, including three years as chairman. He was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville where he served as business manager for a number of years. He also served in several other positions within the church, including Lay Delegate. Fred was a charter member of New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages, Florida, where he served as a Stephen Ministry leader. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge.

He was born September 15, 1934, in Defiance, Ohio, to William and Veda (Goodwin) Manahan. He was the youngest of five children.

On June 17, 1956, in Defiance, Ohio, he married Madilyn Parker. She preceded him in death on November 9, 1995. He then married Irene Sayles on December 28, 1996. She survives in The Villages, Florida.

Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Fred Meyers of Lebanon; a son, Mitchell "Mitch" Manahan of West Bloomfield, Michigan; a stepson, Mike and Joatta Sayles of LaOtto; a stepdaughter, Marla Ann Sayles of Fort Wayne; a grandson, Wes Meyers; two granddaughters, Brekan Manahan and Felecia Ott; and two step granddaughters, Mehgan Sayles and Amanda Sayles.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Martin "Marty" Manahan on November 11, 2010.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Church United Methodist, Kendallville, with Rev. Scott Pattison and Rev. Larry Ray officiating.

Preferred memorials are to Trinity Church United Methodist.
