Fred J. McWhinney, 94, of Kendallville died Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at 4:36 a.m. at Chandler House Assisted Living in Kendallville.
He was born January 16, 1924, in Kendallville to Fred J. and Carrie (Hetzel) McWhinney.
He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from November, 1942 to December, 1945.
On October 22, 1983, in Kendallville he married Linda L. Becker. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2016.
Mr. McWhinney retired as a clerk at the Post Office in Fort Wayne.
Fred enjoyed living on Pretty Lake, wintering in Florida, watching ball games of any kind, and going for a drive. In October, 2016, he was privileged to go on an honor guard flight to Washington, D.C. at the age of 92.
Surviving are a son, Fred J. (Marilyn) McWhinney, III of LaOtto; a daughter, Cheryl (Dave) Brereton of Peoria, Arizona; a stepdaughter, Lori (Roy) Ernsberger of Corunna; five grandchildren, Melissa (Joe) Sroda, Kathleen (Luke) Krouse, Jennifer (Michael) Montoya, Wayne Becraft, William Becraft; four step grandchildren, Jamie (Steve) McKenzie, Amanda (Anthony Shannon) Prater, Sarah (Mark) Masloob, and Kim (Dan) Cosentino ; 12 great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Jane Ketcham and Mary Cochard; and a grandson, Joseph Becraft.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with calling from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Honor guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard and active duty members of the U.S. Navy.
Preferred memorials are to the Humane Society of Noble County or the Friendship Connection of Common Grace Ministries (formerly Friendship Food Pantry) and may be sent to the funeral home.
