Evelyn F. (Leffel) Black, 91, of Avilla died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at 6:00 a.m. in the home of her daughter near Albion.

Mrs. Black has been an area resident for 20 years. She graduated as valedictorian of her senior class in Deedsville, Indiana. She had worked at Wirk Garment in Ligonier, Auburn Rubber Company, and retired from Indiana Wire and Die.

She was born June 14, 1918, in Miami County, Indiana, to Albert and Elizabeth (Hoover) Leffel. She was married to Guy Black.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Wayne Zumbrun of Albion; a son, John Albert Black of Avilla; four grandchildren, Andrea and Peter Yoder, Rebecca and Kirk Sickafoose, Kelly and Tim Shanks, and Dennis Zumbrun; six great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and four sisters, Ethel Lang of Redding, California, Wilma Sanders of Metropolis, Illinois, Hazel Ridyard of Oceanside, California, and Miriam Shultz of South Milford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Black in May, 1999; a son, Dennis Black in 1965; two sisters, Mary Richardson and May DeWald; and a brother, Walter Leffel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Methodist Church in Avilla, with Dr. Leonard King officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Creek Cemetery in DeKalb County.

Preferred memorials are to Calvary Methodist Church, 125 Cherry Street, Avilla, Indiana, 46710

Calling will be Tuesday, August 11, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
